Learning to play melodies or instrument using parts of the ear is like anything else practice: the more you do, the easier it will be. If you do this often enough, you do not even need the instrument to find out. The concept of teaching your ear to decipher musical structures as they are playing is called ear training and practiced and perfected for centuries.

However, the piece de resistance and the tool to be held around the world is ear training SlowGold CD-ROM. Karaoke will never be the same. . .
Learning aid to one side, a very useful exercise is to select a recording of a simple melody that you like. Listen very carefully. See if you can determine when the band is changing chords. If you can choose where these chord changes occur, then you know the points in time when it is necessary to determine what the next chord is.
Tune your instrument to the recording. Take the first chord of the song. As theater, try to select a low note on your instrument that best matches the chord. No one should note that resonates with the recording. Have you found? This is the root of that chord. If this note is a C, you know that the first chord is a C (something). It could be a major chord, a minor chord, a seventh chord, but whatever it is, is a C version of the chord. If you’re listening to “Hey Jude”, the tone for the first chord is an F. If you’re listening to “Wonderwall” is a F #. If it’s “Layla” is a D. . .
Now that you have your root, the next step is to determine the quality of the string. Is it a major chord or minor? Is it a power chord? One sure way to determine this is trial and error. Suppose that is a major chord. Evidence of this possibility by playing the major chord to its tonic, along with the recording. Sound good? Is it an echo? If so, you’ve just discovered what is the first chord. If not, try a minor chord. Touch the minor chord to its tonic, along with the recording. Sound good? Does this resonate? Try a few different options. If you’re stumped, look at the score or transcript of this recording. This is the answer key, so to speak. If you are just starting and need a lot of easy tunes to practice, there are some great books, 3-chord songs like the guitar chord songbook and 3 favorite songs with three chords.
After the first chord is resolved, go to the next point in time where this changes, and find out what is the second chord. Repeat this process until you have covered all the tone. Much of popular music is cyclical and that the same chord pattern often repeated 4.3 over the melody, so you do not need to find out more than 3-4 chords the whole song. Yes, when bands write great songs with just “three chords and an attitude” that makes your job a lot easier.
Why would you do this? Well, first of all, you are improving your ear. Secondly, it is improving their knowledge of chords because you’re forced to play a variety of chords. If you know your tone of a particular chord is an F #, but you do not know what quality is, you may need to test an F # major chord, an F # minor chord, an F # 7 chord, and so on. This solidifies the knowledge of line parameters through their instrument. The melodies to find out, the easier it is to find and play these chords. The other advantage of going through this process is that you are playing along with recordings, which will make you’re playing better, because you’re unconsciously absorb every nuance of the recording in your playing.
The main thing is not to sit around and do it on a regular basis. Turn on the radio and try your hand at whatever you play. If you do not like the melody, change the station. Set to classical station – yes, you can play along with the classics as well. Do not be afraid. All this is just music, and finally, armed with only one ear and the knowledge of some basic chords for the process of trial and error, you can find a way to play.
